Biography

Emma chose to investigate the theme of ‘obsession’, specifically through the use of mobile phones in contemporary culture via story telling. She initially decided to study Robert Ryman, because she wanted to make sense of how his minimalistic paintings required a level of obsession and intensity in order for the viewer to assess and appreciate his work. When looking at Gorgio Morandi’s art, she was drawn to understand his desire to obsessively depict the same few objects over and over again. As an initial inspiration Emma then considered the contemporary prints of the German artist Thomas Kilper and how he used immersive spaces to capture his audience and, in doing so, absorb them into a physical obsession.
