The meaning of ‘Being Human’ is the subject of my artwork. I see myself as ‘alien’ to society as a result of my life and up-bringing being quite detached and unsettled. My artwork aims to document my own discovery of my life and how I integrate into the different societies I have been exposed to, hence trying to ‘become human’. I feel my artwork is like a visual diary, which portrays different locations of my life and versions of myself.
Self-reflection has been the main part of my artwork, which explains why the topics of my artwork are linked to my own feelings. Working with oils on a large wood panel, I rendered a lifelike version of myself to portray my own feelings of being trapped in one place during the events of the pandemic. Which then led me to looking deeper into myself and investigating the more literal meaning of ‘being human’ was.
By looking at the anatomy, and its portrayal throughout art history, I portrayed my discoveries and my own meaning of ‘being human’ through the means of fashion. Working with a variety of textiles and media, I recreated my own pieces of bones, flesh, and parts of anatomy. Then taking those separate parts and stitching them back together to recreate my ‘human being’, which then became a costume for me to wear to become human.
The workings of humans, from their physical beings to their psychological thoughts, have been strong themes in my artwork. “A human being is a part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feeling as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.” ~ Albert Einstein
